About Heathrow Airport

London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is the busiest UK airport as for the passenger traffic and it is located in the western part of London. In 2011 it was registered as the third airport in the world with respect to passenger traffic. The LHR operator is BAA Limited and airways as BMI, British Airways or Virgin Atlantic Airways use it as main hub. The airport name is connected to the hamlet of Heathrow, near which its first airfield was built in 1929.

At present Heathrow Airport uses two long runways running from east to west and there are four functional terminals serving it. Queen Elizabeth II inaugurated Terminal 1 in 1969 and it was first used to handle domestic flights. Significantly expanded in 2005, it is still planned to be demolished and make room for a new section of Terminal 2.

The old Terminal 2 demolished in 2010 will be replaced by a new Terminal 2, currently under construction. Terminal 3 opened in 1961 handles international flights and it has undergone major improvement since its construction. Terminal 4 was ready in 1986 and Heathrow Cargo Tunnel links it to Terminals 1, 2 and 3.

Terminal 5 opened in 2008 and it is used exclusively by British Airways. Concourse A is its main building and it is built on 4 levels. Concourses B and C are two other satellite buildings. Further car parks have been built to handle the increasing number of passengers in the latest years. Here you can find more on Heathrow Airport Hotel.
